Veteran Bollywood star Shatrughan Sinha started his career in the movies with negative roles and gained prominence with his top-notch performances. However, his rising popularity among the audience left many ‘heroes’ insecure, believes Sinha. In a new interview, the actor revealed tha reason behind his transition from negative roles to hero roles. During the interaction, he also revealed that in yesteryears, people in the film industry celebrated the failure of others.

As he spoke to Zoom, Sinha shared that his secretary and his wife Poonam Sinha, were not in favour of him leaving the villain roles. “Not only my secretary, even my wife used to say, ‘Why are you leaving it? There’s so much craze around villains.’ How would have I explained to them that the time has come? The public was supporting me, they were pushing me forward by applauding for me,” said Sinha.

He also quoted other big reason behind his decision. Sinha shared, “All the big heroes were looking for excuses to not work with me. They had a feeling of insecurity. They used to say, ‘Ye toh khaa jaata hai bilkul. Dominate karta hai (scene) (He dominates the scene) Do you want a hero or a hero dominated by a villain?’ They didn’t dare to say it to my face, but used to speak against me behind my back.”

During his active years in the Hindi film industry, it was popular about Sinha that he reported late to the film sets. But he reasoned that he used to finish work quicker. “They (heroes) would say, ‘He comes late’. Arre late bhi aata hun toh tumhare pitaaji ka kya jaata hai (Even if I am late, how does it matter to you?) The work that you finish in 10 hours, everyone praises me that I finish that work in two-three hours. I was a one-take artist. People used to say that I read 10-page dialogues just a couple of times and do direct take. They used to be happy with me,” Sinha added.

The actor, who started his streak of hit films with Subhash Ghai’s Kalicharan, also revealed that earlier filmmakers used to celebrate the failure of films made by their contemporaries.

“There were times when people used to celebrate the failure of others. They would open champagne if someone’s film flopped. They used to forget that they are a part of this cycle. Hit and flop are a part of life here. People used to party not on their success but on the failure of others,” Sinha shared while adding that he too was a part of such celebrations a few times, but now he “cannot be a part of this cycle.”

Shatrughan Sinha last appeared on the silver screen in Dharmendra’s Yamla Pagla Deewana: Phir Se (2018).
