Saif Ali Khan was just 21 years old when he got married to actor Amrita Singh, and it was only after they tied the knot that he told his family members about it. On the latest episode of Koffee with Karan, Saif and his mother, veteran actor Sharmila Tagore, revisited this time in Saif’s life and recalled how he broke the news to the family. Saif shared that Sharmila was ‘hurt’ and ‘started crying’ after he told her, because she expected to be involved in these matters.
Sharmila recalled that she was in Mumbai when Saif came to meet her and broke the news in person. “He said, ‘I have something to tell you’, and then he told me. I don’t know what I was doing, but I was quiet, and he says, ‘Amma, your colour is changing, you are looking different.’ I said, ‘Well okay, we will talk about it later, not now’. After he left, I rang Tiger and told him. There was also a long silence there. We left it at that and then I said, ‘I would like to meet her’,” she said.
Saif recalled that Sharmila was ‘supportive when he did it’ but a tear fell from her eye as he told her about his marriage. “She was supportive when I did it. She told me, ‘I believe you are living with someone and you are doing some things’. I said yes. And she said, ‘Just don’t get married’. And I said, ‘I got married yesterday’, and a big tear fell out of her eye and she started crying and I felt I really hurt her. And she said, ‘You really hurt me, why didn’t you tell me?’ That’s actually what happened,” he recalled.

Sharmila said that the day after Saif and Amrita got married, she met Amrita and they talked. “We had tea or something, we chatted, I liked her, but still, quite shocked,” she shared. When Karan asked what made Saif get married at such a young age, Saif described it as “kind of like running away from home in a sense.” For him, it was “a kind of security and a kind of an idea that this is safe and it feels great. And I thought I could make a home out of that.”
Sharmila looked back at Saif and Amrita’s marriage and described them as “similar people” and said that they “looked very happy together.” However, the marriage fell apart after 13 years and Saif said that they now share a respectful relationship. “Unfortunately, doing it at 20 is young, and things change, but it was great support, she was wonderful to me. She is the mother of two of my children. I have a good relationship with her and it’s all respectful now,” he said.
Saif and Amrita are parents to Sara Ali Khan and Ibrahim Ali Khan. Saif is now married to Kareena Kapoor and has two children with her – Taimur and Jeh. Amrita never married again.
