Mohanlal’s Malaikottai Vaaliban hasn’t met the expectations of the fans, leading to a middling box office performance of the film. Director Lijo Jose Pellissery, who is known to avoid the media light, came out to defend the film. Now, the film’s producer Shibu Baby John has also addressed the underwhelming reception to the film. The producer, speaking to the media, said that Mohanlal’s fans are not appreciative of his attempts to experiment.

The veteran producer compared the fandom of Mohanlal and Mammoottty to point out how Lalletan fans are not receptive to his new attempts. He was quoted as saying, “When Mammootty tries to do something different, his fans welcome it with open arms. But when Mohanlal tries, he faces criticism. His fans want him to do the roles he has always done and not something new.”

The producer also added that the fan fights are also affecting the business of their films. “The friendship between Mammootty and Mohanlal is deep. People who are destroying films in their names are fools. Lijo (the director) is upset because of all this,” he told Manorama.

Earlier, Lijo Jose Pellissery spoke to Galatta Plus explaining why he chose to talk about the film when he always remains silent. “All of a sudden, all the people and their work for the film for one and a half years disappeared. Only the discussions about how it is the worst Malayalam film ever made remained. That made me sad. That’s why I stepped forward and addressed the media. I had never explained why people should watch my films. I did not want people to throw stones at each other over a film. It’s all yours. If you don’t want to watch it, that’s okay. But don’t force others not to.”

Malaikottai Vaaliban, which has been in the making for about two years, also stars Sonalee Kulkarni, Hareesh Peradi, Danish Sait, and Katha Nandi among others. The film follows the story of a nomad warrior (played by Mohanlal) who currently faces a challenge of his lifetime.
