Malaikottai Valiban was expected to be the game-changer in the Malayalam film industry, which is yet to make a mark in the Pan-Indian phenomenon. While 2018 came close to being one such hit, it was no match for the kind of hits the Telugu cinema has been producing. With Malayalam’s biggest star Mohanlal in the lead and the revered director Lijo Jose Pelliserry helming things, Manalikottai Valiban created a lot of intrigue among the fans, but upon release, it lost its sheen at the box office.

Despite decent reviews, Manalikottai Valiban box office collection after first weekend stands at Rs 10 crore. On the opening day, the film minted Rs 5.6 crore, and since then it has been on a  downward spiral. The second-day collection fell by about 50 percent, and the film managed to collect only Rs 2.4 crore. On the weekend, when things were expected to get better, the film only collected comparatively less than the first two days’ collection. It minted Rs 1.5 crore on Saturday (Day 3), and the early estimates of Sacnilk, claim that the third-day collection of the film is only 1.25 crore.

The film is expected to continue the trend over the week. The film’s director Lijo Jose Pellissery attributed the poor response to the film to a negative campaign against the film. Speaking to Manorama Online, he asked the audience to not get influenced by others’ opinions. “I don’t understand what benefits people derive from this negative campaign,” he said.

Anandu Suresh of Indian Express rated the film with three stars and wrote, “Unlike Mohanlal’s most recent films, where makers often got carried away by either his stardom or his potential as a performer, the multi-genre Malaikottai Vaaliban strikes a fine balance between these aspects, while striving not to compromise on its overall quality.”

The fantasy film also starring Danish Sair, Sonalee Kulkarni, Hareesh Peradi, Manoj Moses, and Katha Nandi in lead roles, follows the story of a warrior who wins over warriors across times and geography only to finally meet a tough opponent, which becomes his most challenging mission.
