The nominations for the 96th Academy Awards were announced on Tuesday evening (IST), with Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer leading the pack with 13 nods. Ryan Gosling, who received a nomination in the supporting actor category for his performance in critically acclaimed blockbuster Barbie, has strongly reacted to the film’s lead star, Margot Robbie, and director Greta Gerwig, being snubbed at the nominations. Gosling played Ken in the satirical comedy, with Margot Robbie starring as Barbie, in addition to also produced the film.

Reacting to Robbie and Gerwig not receiving best actress and best director nominations at this year’s Oscars, Gosling said in a statement that while he is “extremely honoured” to be nominated, “there is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig.”

Gosling continued in his statement, shared with People magazine, “I am extremely honored to be nominated by my colleagues alongside such remarkable artists in a year of so many great films. And I never thought I’d be saying this, but I’m also incredibly honored and proud that it’s for portraying a plastic doll named Ken.”

He added, “But there is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally celebrated film. No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit and genius. To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement.”

Gosling also congratulated his Barbie co-actor America Ferrara who received a nomination in the supporting actress category. Expressing joy for her, he said, “Having said that I am so happy for America Ferrera and the other incredible artists who contributed their talents to making this such a groundbreaking film.”

America Ferrera also expressed disappointment about Robbie and Gerwig not being nominated at the Oscars. Talking to Variety, she said, “Greta has done just about everything that a director could do to deserve it. Creating this world, and taking something that didn’t have inherent value to most people and making it a global phenomenon. It feels disappointing to not see her on that list.”

The official nomination line-up was dominated by Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer with 13 nominations and Martin Scorsese’s Killer of the Flower Moon getting 10 nominations. Poor Things, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, got 11 nominations. Gerwig was nominated for her screenplay, alongside Noah Baumbach, while Robbie was nominated for producing Barbie.
