Karan Johar, who has often faced backlash on social media, recently responded to trolls targeting him for promoting nepotism in the film industry. The controversy began when a clip from Vasan Bala’s interview went viral, in which the filmmaker expressed his dissatisfaction with Karan for forwarding a half-baked Jigra script to Alia Bhatt without his knowledge. He noted that had he been aware Karan was sending it to Alia, he would have corrected grammatical errors in the script.

In response to the criticism, Karan shared a lengthy note addressing the misrepresentation of Vasan Bala’s recent comment and the backlash he received online. He included a photo of a person placing their finger on their lips, with the caption reading, “We have to be strong to ensure our life is stable enough to shut some negative people’s mouth. –I’m, Salmiah.”

Karan wrote in the caption, “Twitter became X and became my X a while ago… I broke up with the nauseous noise and muted the unwarranted angst … but social media is like the Loch ness monster it’s gets to you even when you can’t see it.. so was flooded with Vasan Bala’s interview which he answered with pure innocence and so much love … the grave misinterpretation of his comment about me sending the script to Alia without his grammar checks made me laugh initially at the ludicrousness of it all but now is truly annoying me.”

He added, “Vasan continues to be one of my most talented and wonderful collaborators and if you see his interview and hear his tone you will totally get it! BUT NO … much ado about nothing is all over the place…I fold my hands and tell everyone please hear and read entire interviews before making click bait assumptions. ❤️! Loads of Love to all of you.”

In an interview with Tried and Refused Productions, Vasan Bala remarked, “I had written a very kachha pakka email, stream of consciousness thoughts… sent it to Karan and 6-7 hours later, he called saying that I have already sent it to Alia and I was really not happy with it. I was like I would have at least done some spell check, grammar check, hygiene, written some very nice hero entry… That email was sent and I asked Karan ‘Why did you do this?’ He said ‘No, no this is how it works. Then he said we’ll meet in a couple of days,” he recalled. Alia also had mentioned that she liked Jigra’s script from the first half itself.

Overwhelmed by Karan clearing up the misconception on Instagram, Vasan commented on the post, writing, “Love you, Karan.”

Jigra, which also stars Vedang Raina, is set to release in theaters on October 11.
