Al Pacino has revealed for the first time his harrowing near-death experience with COVID-19 back in 2020. The legendary actor opened up in an interview with The New York Times, describing how his “pulse was gone” after a severe reaction to steroids while being treated for the virus.

Pacino shared that his health quickly deteriorated after contracting COVID. “I felt unusually not good. I had a fever and was getting dehydrated,” he explained. The actor then arranged for a nurse to hydrate him at home, but the situation escalated unexpectedly. “I was sitting there in my house, and I was gone. Like that. I didn’t have a pulse.”

Paramedics rushed to his home, and Pacino recalled the surreal moment when he regained consciousness. “In a matter of minutes, there were about six paramedics and two doctors in my living room. They had these outfits that looked like they were from outer space. It was shocking to open your eyes and see that. Everybody was around me, and they said: ‘He’s back. He’s here.’”

Despite the gravity of the situation, Pacino said he didn’t experience anything like the “white light” often associated with near-death experiences. “There’s nothing there. As Hamlet says, ‘To be or not to be’; it’s just no more. You’re gone.”

Reflecting on the experience, Pacino found comfort in his long career and his family. “My 50 years of work was a consolation, and having children is a consolation. It’s natural to have a different view of death as you get older. It just comes.”

Pacino, now 84, welcomed his youngest child, Roman, last year with producer Noor Alfallah. Known for iconic roles in films like The Godfather, Scarface, and The Irishman, Pacino’s most recent movie Modì premiered last week at the 72nd San Sebastián International Film Festival.
