Mauritius President Prithvirajsing Roopun announced on Friday that the country will hold its general election on November 10. Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, leader of the Militant Socialist Movement (MSM), won the previous election in 2019, securing 38 of the 62 seats in Parliament.
Last year, a British court acting as Mauritius’ final court of appeal upheld Jugnauth’s 2019 victory, dismissing an opposition candidate’s allegations of bribery and undue influence.
Jugnauth has served as prime minister since 2017, taking over from his father in leading the nation of 1.3 million people, known for its prosperous financial sector and position as a bridge between Africa and Asia.
