Sobhita Dhulipala is basking in the glory of her recent successes, with the critically acclaimed Made In Heaven and The Night Manager earning an International Emmy Award nomination. On the personal front, she’s also celebrating her engagement to Telugu movie star Naga Chaitanya, though she prefers to keep their love story under wraps. As she promotes her latest film, Love, Sitara, streaming on Zee5, Sobhita opens up about navigating modern love and the evolving portrayal of romance in cinema.

Love, Sitara, directed by Vandana Kataria and produced by Ronnie Screwvala under RSVP Movies, is a complex love story between a Malayali girl and a Punjabi chef, complicated by family dynamics. Sobhita reflects on the nature of love, saying, “What is real love? It is only an interpretation.” She questions the notion of “real” love, highlighting its subjective nature.

When asked if she finds it satisfying to see more realistic love stories in films today, unlike the romantic fluff of the 90s, Sobhita tells indianexpress.com, “Fluff has existed before, I think it is very much even now. Amazing female parts, amazing relationship stories were shown before and now as well. I don’t think it is right for us to take a higher ground that ab jo films ban rahi hai woh zyada realistic hai (that today’s films are more realistic). Because love mein kya real hai and kya unreal hai (what is real and unreal in love), all that depends on what is between the two of them (two people in love). What is real? It is only an interpretation.”

With nearly a decade in the industry, Sobhita’s filmography boasts successful projects featuring strong, vocal female leads. She attributes this to her fortunate choices. She says, “I feel like I probably play parts that are far more relatable than the conventional ones because real women are a bunch of contradictions put together, they have a voice, they leave a footprint of their own… I have had the chance to play parts like that.”

Sobhita’s drive to portray empowered women stems from a broader cinematic perspective. “Through the ages, I feel like we have had amazing films. It doesn’t have to be a female-centric film. There have been amazing parts written for women… I don’t know, if I have to sit and think of ab kya chal raha hai and kya nahi chal raha hai [what’s trending and what’s not], then it would naturally limit or influence the choices that I would want to make.”

As Sobhita continues to captivate audiences with her nuanced performances, her thoughts on love and cinema serve as a reminder of the complexity and subjectivity of human emotions. She explains, “Instead, if I just look at what the stories are that I want to watch or tell, and how I can make myself an asset to those kinds of films… I can only be in that pursuit. Anything beyond that is really not in my control, I am a small fry and I am flying.”

Love, Sitara is streaming on Zee5, offering a poignant exploration of love’s intricacies.
