In a combined stabbing and shooting attack in Israel’s capital Tel Aviv, seven people died and 16 others were wounded near a light-rail stop and the Gaza based Hamas militant group has claimed responsibility for the incident.

Hamas’ armed wing Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades claimed responsibility for the attack in Tel Aviv which killed at least seven people, the group has said in a statement, according to news agency Reuters.

Israel Police, in a statement on Wednesday said, two armed men entered a railcar which had stopped and started firing at the passengers. The accused then started rallying towards Jerusalem Boulevard in the city’s busy Jaffa neighborhood and “hitting passersby until they were neutralized” by the local police and citizens who used their “personal pistol”.

The two suspects were named Muhammad Masek, 19, who died at the scene after authorities backfired and Ahmed Himoni, 25, who was seriously hurt. Police said that the suspects were armed with “M16 weapons, cartridges and a knife” and they were residents of Hebron.

Yousef Kourdi, an emergency medical technician with Israel’s emergency service said, “I noticed several victims near the train tracks suffering from gunshot wounds. I immediately began providing medical treatment, and at the same time, passersby pointed out additional victims at a nearby kiosk,” according to a Washington Post report.

The attack in Tel Aviv took place just ahead of ballistic missile bombardment by Iran which shook the country as more than 200 missiles were fired by Tehran toward Israel and emergency sirens went off across the nation with residents fleeing to safe zones.
