Tim Southee, who took over as the Test captain of New Zealand from Kane Williamson in December 2022, has stepped down from his role. The decision comes after a 2-0 series whitewash at the hands of Sri Lanka, and ahead of the three-Test series against India starting later this month.
“Captaining the BLACKCAPS in a format that’s so special to me, has been an absolute honour and a privilege. I’ve always tried to put the team first throughout my career and I believe this decision is the best for the team,” Southee was quoted by New Zealand Cricket.
Southee, who made his debut in 2008, has claimed 382 wickets off his 102 appearances for the country in atthe longest format.
His captaincy run saw New Zealand win six games off the 14 they played, lose as many, and draw on a couple of occasions.
“I will, as I’ve always done, continue to support my teammates, especially the exciting young bowlers making their way on the international stage. I wish Tom all the best in the role and he knows I’ll be there to support him on his journey, as he has done for me over the years,” Southee said.
New Zealand coach Gary Stead was all praise for the veteran pacer.
“Tim’s a fantastic player and a very good leader who is held in high regard by the players and support staff,” he said.
“He’s been a great servant of New Zealand Cricket over nearly 17 years playing on the international stage, and I’d like to acknowledge his humility in stepping down from the role as Test captain,” he added.

New Zealand will depart for India this Friday for their 13th Test series in the country where they are yet to register a series win. India have clinched the series on 10 occasions, drawing the series twice.
