Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant announced late Tuesday night that he held a discussion with US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin regarding the escalating security situation along Israel’s northern border. The two leaders emphasised the “urgent need to dismantle Hezbollah’s attack infrastructure” to safeguard Israeli communities.

In a post on X, Gallant detailed the targeted operations conducted by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) against Hezbollah positions, aimed at neutralizing the militant group’s leadership and degrading its offensive capabilities. He noted the importance of these actions in preventing potential attacks similar to those witnessed on October 7.

Secretary Austin reaffirmed the United States’ support for Israel’s right to defend itself, stating that the US remains committed to a diplomatic resolution that would allow civilians on both sides to return safely to their homes. He echoed Gallant’s concerns about the threat posed by Iranian-backed groups and stressed the importance of US military readiness to protect personnel and allies in the region.

Both officials expressed a united front in addressing the broader threats from Iran and its proxies in Iraq, Yemen, and Syria. Austin reiterated the serious consequences for Iran should it decide to launch a direct military attack against Israel, emphasizing that the US is determined to prevent any escalation of conflict in the region.

Meanwhile, the Israeli military activated air raid sirens across central Israel, including Tel Aviv, on Tuesday after conducting “limited” and “targeted” ground operations against the Iran-backed Hezbollah militant group in southern Lebanon, according to Reuters. Earlier in the day, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) launched ground raids based on precise intelligence, targeting Hezbollah positions in villages near the border that are deemed an immediate threat to northern Israeli communities.
