Jr NTR’s Devara was one of the hugely anticipated films in Telugu cinema. It was expected that Devara would open big, and mark Jr NTR’s triumphant return to the box-office as a solo hero. But after two days of its run worldwide, it is clear that no one expected Devara to mint the numbers it is currently making. Devara has become a bonafide box-office juggernaut. After making Rs 82.5 crore domestically on Day 1, the film has comfortably breached the Rs 100 crore mark by making an approximate Rs 40 crore on Day 2, taking the domestic tally to Rs 122.5 crore. It is to be noted that the huge numbers of the opening day is also a result of the early screenings of the film across the world. Courtesy sanctions from the Telugu states, Devara started running from 1 am on the day of the release, and it gave the film a bullish run at the box-office. Hence, the almost 50 per cent dip in the collections on Day 2 doesn’t necessarily mean the movie is waning.

As expected it was the Telugu states that contributed the most to the collections of the Koratala Siva directorial, which has added sheen to the filmmaker’s career, which was at an unfortunate space after the colossal failure of Acharya, his film with Chiranjeevi and Ram Charan. With Devara, he has bounced back in style. But what truly has changed Devara from a successful film to a pan-Indian blockbuster is its collections from the Hindi version. In fact, the Hindi version of Devara has collected more on Day 2 than Day 1, with an increase from Rs 7 crore to Rs 9.2 crore on the first Saturday. Just the Telugu version itself has crossed the Rs 100 crore mark. With the makers NTR Arts and Yuvasudha Arts announcing that the Day 1 global box-office collection was a whopping Rs 172 crore, it is expected that the movie would comfortably cross the Rs 250 crore mark on Day 2, and even close in on the Rs 300 crore GBOC.

Devara has become the film with the second biggest opening in Indian cinema this year after Prabhas-Nag Ashwin’s Kalki 2898 AD. This marks a new phase in Jr NTR’s career, which has him at the centre of pan-Indian stardom after the global success of SS Rajamouli’s RRR, which also starred Ram Charan. These unprecedented numbers for a Jr NTR film that was built solely on the reputation of the superstar cements his pan-Indian credentials, and is expected to usher in a new era of stardom for the actor. With his next film being Ayan Mukerji’s War 2, where he would lock horns with Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR might just be on the way to becoming a force that no one was ready for, but has to reckon with in the near future.

With no other marquee films hitting the screens for the next few weeks, barring the big release of Rajinikanth’s Vettaiyan on October 10, Devara would enjoy the uninterrupted run at the box-office, and it would be interesting to see where the final numbers end up. Devara’s pan-Indian presence is also bolstered by its star cast that includes actors like Saif Ali Khan, Janhvi Kapoor, Prakash Raj, Kalaiyarasan, Shine Tom Chacko. With music by Anirudh Ravichander and cinematography by Ratnavelu, Devara marks the first solo release of Jr NTR after Trivikram Srinivas’ 2018 blockbuster, Aravinda Sametha Veera Raghava.
