Mumbai batting sensation Musheer Khan will be out of action for 16 weeks after suffering a road accident on Friday afternoon. The teenager will miss the upcoming Irani Cup in Lucknow and the start of the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 season.

The Indian Express understands that Musheer was travelling with his father Naushad Khan and two more people from Azamgarh to Lucknow at Yamuna Expressway on Friday afternoon when his car met with a divider and overturned.

While his father and two more people had minor scratches, Musheer is said to have experienced concussion and pain behind his neck. He was taken to a nearby hospital for further treatment. The doctors have said Musheer could take at least 16 weeks to recover and may be carrying a possible fracture which has yet to be ascertained. Musheer will now be flying back to Mumbai this Sunday for further treatment.

“He met with an accident last night and will miss the Irani Cup. He will be flying back to Mumbai on Sunday. The medical team of MCA and BCCI is monitoring his situation. The BCCI will be doing another round of medical tests and scan once he returns,” an MCA official said.

The Mumbai team flew from Mumbai to Lucknow to take part in Irani Cup on Friday evening and Musheer was scheduled to join from his hometown where he had undergone training. The MCA wanted Musheer to fly with the team but his father Naushad had requested to allow his son train in Azamgarh as his son didn’t score much in the last five innings of Duleep Trophy. The MCA with consultation with Mumbai team coaching management agreed to Naushad’s request. The Mumbai team had planned two day nets in Mumbai but it was marred by rains.

Defending Ranji Trophy champions Mumbai are slated to take on the Rest of India in the one-off affair at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium from October 1-5. Mumbai are yet to name Musheer’s replacement. The right-handed batter will also miss the initial rounds of Mumbai’s 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season which begins on October 11.

The 19-year-old Musheer, the younger sibling of India Test batter Sarfaraz Khan, was recently in action in the Duleep Trophy. In his debut Duleep Trophy game in Bengaluru, Musheer cracked a century for India B. However, Musheer could only add six more runs in four subsequent innings while bagging two ducks.

Musheer, who was one of India’s breakout stars during the last Under-19 World Cup in early 2024, stamped a strong comeback into the Ranji Trophy in February. In his first game for Mumbai in nearly two years, Musheer cracked his maiden First-Class double hundred before shining in the Ranji final against Vidarbha. Musheer cracked a second-innings hundred as Mumbai bagged their record-extending 42nd Ranji title.

Musheer has compiled over 700 runs in nine FC matches, averaging over 50 while registering three hundreds and a fifty.
