Navya Naveli Nanda, the granddaughter of actors Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan, recently attended an event where she was asked about the trolls who attacked her on social media after she announced her admission to IIM Ahmedabad. Navya, who is also an entrepreneur, said that social media is a great platform that has given voice to a lot of people. She added that she acknowledges her privilege, and is not offended by what people have to say on social media.

When asked about the trolling she was subjected to after her IIM announcement, Navya said, “Social media been a great tool that, if used in the right way, really has the potential to bring about positive change. Having said that, since you bring up IIM, I am extremely fortunate to be a part of such an incredible institution.” Navya then addressed the trolling, and said that she has made an “active choice” to put her life out in the public. “I have made an active decision to put myself out there, to put my work out there,” she said, and added, “I don’t think I can be against or offended by things people have to say.”

Navya said that it is important for her to accept feedback about herself and her work. “I think it is important for me to look at what people have to say about me and my work. It will only make me a better person, a better entrepreneur, a better Indian. I think it’s very important for us to take critical feedback in the correct way so I don’t take offense to anything that people say,” she said.

Navya then acknowledged her privileged family background and said that this is not the lived reality of most people. “I also accept that I come from a very different lived reality to most people in India today. I come from a very privileged background and I have been given a lot more opportunities than say other young women my age. I think, of course, people will have something to say about that. I think it’s important for me to be open minded and take all of that feedback into the best that I can with myself and my work so I don’t give too much thought to what people say negatively. I actually use it to do the best I can,” she said.

Earlier this month, Navya announced that she is a part of IIM Ahmedabad’s Blended Post Graduate Programme.
