President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have introduced new executive actions aimed at addressing gun violence in the United States. These measures focus on improving safety in schools and addressing the use of illegal gun conversion devices, which can turn firearms into fully automatic weapons.

The announcement marks the one-year anniversary of the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, which Harris leads.

During a White House event, Biden signed an executive order focused on reducing the psychological impact of active shooter drills in schools and addressing the increased use of 3D-printed devices that convert guns into automatic weapons. A task force has been created to assess these threats, with a report expected within 90 days.

In addition to focusing on gun violence in schools, the executive actions aim to improve how schools conduct active shooter drills. Biden has instructed the US Surgeon General, along with the Departments of Education and Health and Human Services, to create guidelines that help schools conduct these drills in a way that minimizes trauma for students and staff.

Harris highlighted the progress made since the creation of the Office of Gun Violence Prevention, which was established to explore ways to reduce gun violence without requiring new legislation.

One of the key actions taken by the administration includes the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, signed into law last year. This law strengthened background checks and restricted gun sales to high-risk individuals.

The White House also reported a decrease in violent crime, with homicides down 11.6% in 2023, and mass shootings down by 20% compared to last year.

These new actions are part of ongoing efforts to reduce gun violence and improve public safety in the country.
