Author-filmmaker Madhura Pandit Jasraj, wife of the late Pandit Jasraj, passed away due to age-related illnesses on Wednesday. She was 86. The family’s spokesperson confirmed her demise, stating that Madhura breathed her last at her Mumbai residence.

Madhura was the daughter of legendary filmmaker V Shantaram. Madhura and Pandit Jasraj are survived by two children, music director Shaarang Dev Pandit and TV personality Durga Jasraj.

According to a note shared by their spokesperson Pritam Sharma, Madhura’s mortal remains will be taken from her Andheri residence in the afternoon to the Oshiwara crematorium, where her last rites will be performed between 4-4:30 PM on Wednesday.

Madhura wrote several books, including V Shantaram: The Man Who Changed Indian Cinema, and a 550-page Marathi biograph Shantarama. Later, she also turned a director, helming her first film, Aai Tujha Ashirwad, a Marathi mythological drama. She directed the film–which released in 2010– at the age of 73.

Madhura and Pandit Jasraj tied the knot in 1962. In an interview with Times of India, Pandit Jasraj had recalled his first meeting with Madhura, which was on March 6, 1954, at a concert. He had said he was advised to speak with her as it could get him introduced to her father, who was making the film Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje back then.

“We met briefly and, till 1960, I met her each time I performed in Mumbai. Otherwise, we were not in touch as the phone was an expensive option and since I hardly attended school, writing letters was not for me. In 1960, I stayed in Mumbai for a month, during which time we fell in love. Meanwhile, Madhura’s father made enquiries about me, suspecting that I was already married,” he had said. Pandit Jasraj passed away in August 2020.
