Kangana Ranaut, who is awaiting the release of her film Emergency, which is yet to receive its censor certification, was recently asked about the ‘double standards’ of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). In a chat hosted by News18, the host falsely claimed that Netflix series IC814: The Kandahar Hijack “changed the names of the terrorists but did not get any cuts”. He then asked Kangana that if she felt like these were “double standards” considering her film Emergency still hasn’t been certified by the Central Board of Film Certification. Presently, the content streamed exclusively on OTT platforms does not require certification from CBFC.

To this, Kangana said that the CBFC was a “redundant body,” but also said that OTT platforms should come under its purview. “Technologically, the place we are at, censor board, to be honest, has become a redundant body. I raised the same thing during the previous parliament session as well,” she said. She then added that kids have access to numerous things on platforms like YouTube which is “worrisome.”

“The kind of things that are being shown on OTT… The kind of things kids have access to on YouTube, sometimes we are scared what a kid might stumble upon. Just by paying money, you can access any channel you want. This is quite worrisome. We struggle so much with the censor that ‘why did you show blood? why did you have that cut?’ So I think we need to rethink. The one who needs censorship the most is OTT platforms,” she said.

She then said that she has raised this in the parliament as well but the matter isn’t getting much attention at the moment. “I can only hope that OTT gets censorship as soon as possible for the welfare of the country,” she said.

The Netflix series IC814: The Kandahar Hijack, based on the 1999 hijacking of the Indian Airlines flight, identified five terrorists with the code names that they used during the hijack. The code names used on the show were the same as those they used in real life, but a certain section of the audience took offense at two of the hijackers being named Bhola and Shankar. After questions were raised about this, Netflix added a disclaimer which also mentioned the terrorist’s real names.

Kangana’s film is yet to be released. The film based on the life for former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. It has been suggested that the depiction of the Sikh community in the film has been a matter of concern for the censor board. Kangana won the Lok Sabha elections in 2024 from Mandi, Himachal Pradesh as a candidate representing BJP.
