Actor Esha Deol made her debut in the movies at a time when it was common for the children of stars to get major ‘launches’. Esha, the daughter of Dharmendra and Hema Malini, recently revealed that her father wasn’t against the idea of her working in films, and wanted to marry her off at the age of 18. Esha confessed that it took some time for her to convince her father, but he ultimately agreed.

Talking to Hauterrfly, Esha said that her father is “rightfully orthodox,” and added that he wanted her to get married as a teenager because that’s what he’d grown up seeing around him. “He didn’t want that I should enter the movies. He is a bit orthodox, rightfully so… He is a Punjabi father, and he wanted that we should get married, settle down at 18. That is his conditioning, he is coming from a place where all the women in his house were brought up that way. But my upbringing was very different,” she said.

Esha said that she grew up with her mother Hema Malini, and was very influenced by her career in the movies. She, too, wanted to make a name for herself. But it took some time for her to convince her father. “I knew I wanted to be someone, but it took a while to convince him. It was not easy, but today is a different story,” she said. Dharmendra’s two sons with first wife Prakash Kaur, Sunny and Bobby, were both established actors by the time Esha made her debut in the movies in 2002.

In the same chat, Esha shared that she grew up in a strict environment as her maternal grandmother would not allow her to wear short skirts and spaghetti tops. “My grandmother was very strict. We were not allowed to wear spaghettis and short skirts and go out. We were not allowed many late nights,” she said, and added that she went through a rebellious phase when she’d lie to her folks to go out. “There was a phase where I would lie to go out on late nights. I have done all of that. It’s not like I haven’t done that and it used to be fun too,” she said.
