Veteran actor Pankaj Kapur, known for his exceptional talent and versatility, has been a beloved figure in Indian cinema for decades. He is also the proud father of Bollywood heartthrob Shahid Kapoor. With a career spanning decades and including numerous iconic roles, Pankaj Kapur continues to captivate audiences with his remarkable performances. Next, he will be seen in the film Binny And Family, which is also the launch of Varun Dhawan’s niece Anjini Dhawan.

Pankaj, 70, in this interview with indianexpress.com discusses his family dynamics, his relationship with his eldest son Shahid Kapoor and younger children Sanah and Ruhaan Kapur. He says, he has been a friend to his children and has always tried to learn from them, never forced his ideas upon them in their growing up years.

In his upcoming film Binny And Family, Pankaj plays a conservative grandparent visiting his son in London and trying to get along with their granddaughter, played by Anjini Dhawan. When asked how his family dynamics have been through the years, Kapur says that he has always been friends with his children and grandchildren — Shahid’s children Misha and Zain.

He says, “Generally, the approach I have had with handling my children or grandchildren is to have a sense of friendliness towards them. Try to understand what they are saying and doing, and be part of their (life) instead of inflicting rules and regulations on them.”

“In years to come, they’ll understand your wisdom and they’ll understand what you can give to them, what they can imbibe from you. In the meanwhile try and imbibe what you can from the generation that is today’s, which, in my understanding, is more abreast with the times as compared to the generation that has gone past,” he adds.

Kapur then spoke about the evolving nature of his relationship with his children. Shahid is his eldest son from his marriage with actor Neelima Azim, and Sanah and Ruhaan are his children from his second marriage with actor Supriya Pathak.

When asked about his equation with his son and his grandchildren, Pankaj said that he has picked up Shahid’s warmth, intelligence, and the way he talks to people. “I learn a lot of new things from them. That is how it happens with either Shahid or Sanah and Ruhaan, my other two children. It is constantly that I am in touch with them and trying to see what I can learn from them without inflicting my ideas on them. ” says Pankaj.

He also weighed in on the debate given Anjini — Varun’s niece and granddaughter of Anil Dhawan — makes her acting debut with Binny And Family. Pankaj says that while coming from a film family can give an actor access to the industry, they have to “prove their talent afresh”.

Talking about Anjini, Kapur says, “Somebody who comes from a film family is aware of the atmosphere in which they are supposed to work. But as far as working is concerned that has to happen afresh, which means they have to prove their talent in the given project. It is a welcome thing that she (Anjini) comes from a family which is well known, and in the industry for a long time. She in herself is a very competent girl and she has done a job in the film.”

Pankaj Kapur’s Binny And Family, backed by Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji Motion Films, will release in cinemas on September 20.
