The Netflix series IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack, directed by Anubhav Sinha, has recreated the events of the 1999 hijacking of the Indian Airlines flight from Kathmandu to New Delhi. In the show, the terrorist leader goes by the codename of Chief, and is played by Rajiv Thakur. In a recent interview, Rajiv shared that he was cast on the show just days before the shoot, and recalled that he and Vijay Varma, who played the show’s version of Capt Devi Sharan Singh, shared a great bond while the cameras were not rolling.

In a chat with Bollywood Now, Rajiv said that Vijay and him would sometimes get scolded because they would be having too much fun on set. “Vijay and I would joke around as soon as cut was called. Like we would say ‘How would Dara Singh say the same dialogue?’ We would get scolded also. ‘Get serious about your work’,” he shared and added, “I think it was our chemistry that was evident on screen.”

Rajiv said that in real life, the terrorist had a gun pushed against the pilot’s neck the whole time. So much so that the pilot’s neck started bleeding because of the force. Vijay insisted that Rajiv push the gun into his neck while they were performing. “I had that confidence that I can push the gun against his neck. Otherwise why would I do that with a star when I meet him for the first time? I could have just placed the gun lightly on his neck but Vijay said ‘nahi kar, mujhe dikhana hai screen pe (do it, I want to show it on screen)’,” he said.

In an earlier chat shared on Netflix India’s YouTube channel, Anubhav Sinha shared that the pilot still has a mark on his neck from being held at gunpoint. “He still has a mark on his neck, from where the hijackers had put the gun on him. It kept rubbing against his skin for so long that it left a mark, and the mark is still there,” he said.
