Zeenat Aman was a movie star in the 1970s but for the generation today, she is an inspirational social media icon who has aged gracefully and shared some wise advice with her followers. Zeenat led her life in an unconventional way and while that included her choice of films, her personal life also saw a reflection of the same.

Zeenat was reportedly in a relationship with actor Sanjay Khan and it did not end well as Sanjay was married at the time. Zeenat had previously spoken about dealing with physical abuse “publicly” and said that it was “brief” chapter in the past in a chat with Simi Garewal. In another recent chat with Rediff, when Zeenat was asked if she had forgiven the men who “ill-treated” her, Zeenat said she had forgiven them as she saw no point in holding grudges. “I’ve forgiven them completely. I see no point in holding grudges. I’d rather not have any negativity within me. It’s all gone, washed away. With every passing year, it’s only the here and the now that seems important,” she said.

Sanjay, who was accused of hitting Zeenat in a public gathering, told Hrishikesh Kannan on his podcast that he “never slapped her” and said that it was a “PR attack against me which came like a blitzkrieg.” In the interview, Sanjay defended himself by repeating that he “never slapped” her. “I was even accused of her eye going out… she is losing her eye which is not right. If you see ’81, ’82, ’83, ’84, she has done several films. There is evidence to the fact that she has perfect eyes. Later on in life she became a little squint because her mother was squint a little bit. It was a hereditary thing that was labelled one me that I slapped her, I never slapped her, and this was blasphemy,” he said.

When asked if he ever spoke to Zeenat after the alleged altercation, Sanjay said that he “met her the very next day and she was perfectly okay.” Zeenat did not sat much at the time. In a chat with Simi Garewal in the 1990s, Zeenat hinted at this incident and shared, “For many years, in my mind, it’s been obliterated because I think that’s what the human mind does. When there is something distinctly unpleasant, you just close your mind to it and pretend that it never happened and you promise yourself that it will never happen again. And that’s how you cope.” Zeenat and Sanjay starred together in the 1980 film Abdullah.

Zeenat was married to Mazhar Khan from 1985–1998.
