Matt Lauer’s daughter, Romy Lauer, joked about racing a car just hours before smashing her vehicle into a fence and a sign on Fourth of July weekend and proceeding to flee the scene.
In a video posted on TikTok on July 4, the 20-year-old and two of her girlfriends mouthed the words to Kevin James’ viral speech at the Daytona 500 in 2007.
The “King of Queens” alum, 59, said at the time, “I’ve just got three things to say: God bless our troops, God bless America and, gentlemen, start your engines.”
Romy enthusiastically delivered the last part of the phrase in the clip, smiling and waving her arms high.
The college student and her pals were out to dinner at the time at sushi hotspot Kissaki in the Hamptons neighborhood Water Mill.
Shortly after, around 4 a.m. on the morning of July 5, a concerned local notified police that they heard a loud noise near North Sea Mecox Road and were worried someone was hurt.
When officers arrived, the person who crashed was not on the scene, but law enforcement found a damaged fence, sign and a license plate that had been left behind.
exclusively reported Wednesday that Southhampton Town police were able to identify Romy as the driver who had fled the accident because the plate belonged to her Jeep Wrangler.

The young woman, whom Matt shares with his ex-wife Annette Roque, was issued a summons for leaving the scene of the crime, cops confirmed to us.
Romy has since hired local powerhouse lawyer Edward Burke Jr. The attorney is also currently representing Justin Timberlake in the singer’s ongoing DWI case in Sag Harbor.
Five days after the crash, Romy was back on TikTok posting more videos.
On July 9, she shared her excitement over a trip to Europe she had planned, writing in the caption of a video of herself posing in front of a mirror, “spain tomorrowww.”
In addition to Romy, Matt, 66, and Roque, 57, share sons Jack, 23, and Thijs, 17.
The fired “Today” show anchor did not return ’s request for comment on his daughter’s accident.
