Actors often spend months together working on a project, and it’s not uncommon for them to develop romantic feelings. When two stars work together in 18 films, as was the case with legendary actors Raj Kapoor and Nargis, sparks are almost inevitable. The two grew close while collaborating on multiple iconic projects like Barsaat, Shree 420, Awaara, and Jagte Raho, among others. However, their relationship was not without controversy, as Raj Kapoor was already married and a father at the time, while Nargis was becoming a superstar in her own right.

Nargis later married another co-star, Sunil Dutt, and she never worked in anyt other Raj Kapoor film. But the rumours of their relationship caused a rift between the two families and Nargis never attended any social gatherings hosted by the Kapoors. This went on for 24 years. But, it finally ended when Nargis was invited to attend the wedding of Raj Kapoor’s son Rishi Kapoor to Neetu Kapoor. Nargis attended the function with her husband Sunil.

In his memoir Khullam Khulla, Rishi Kapoor mentioned how Nargis was nervous attending the wedding but Raj Kapoor’s wife Krishna made her feel comfortable and welcome. He wrote, “Nargis-ji had not set foot in RK Studios after she completed Jagte Raho in 1956. However, that day, she came with Sunil Dutt to attend the ceremony. She was apparently very nervous about attending a Kapoor event after twenty-four years. My mother, sensing her hesitation, reportedly took her aside and said, ‘My husband is a handsome man. He is also a romantic. I can understand the attraction. I know what you are thinking, but please don’t beat yourself up over the past. You have come to my home on a happy occasion and we are here today as friends.’”

In the book, Rishi didn’t mince words while addressing his father’s affairs. He recalled how Raj Kapoor was romantically involved with Vyjayanthimala. “I was very young when my father had an affair with Nargis Ji, and so was not affected by it. I don’t remember feeling anything was amiss at home either. But I do remember moving into the Natraj Hotel on Marine Drive with my mom during the time Papa was involved with Vyjayanthimala,” he wrote.

Raj Kapoor died in 1988 at the age of 63.
