Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Chak De India is still known as one of his best performances. The film by Shimit Amin is also considered to be one of the best sports films to be made in India. Sudeep Chatterjee, the cinematographer of the movie, in a recent interview spoke about the making of the film and how it was a challenge for him to make sure that the matches don’t look like the audience is watching televised sports.

In a chat with Film Companion, Sudeep spoke about the scene after the Indian team wins the World Cup and the players rush on to the field, and and emotional Kabir Khan is standing on the edge on the field. “That moment is actually a very sad moment because all the glory and the victory belongs to the girls and he is the one in the background, very few people will even know about his contribution. For me, that was the truth of the scene,” he said.

Sudeep said that he and Shimin had many discussions regarding the framing of Shah Rukh’s close-up against the Indian flag in the background as the team wins the World Cup. “There is a great dignity with which this moment was shot. At some point, you move away, you let him be because that moment must be something to him,” he shared.

Sudeep Chatterjee said that the team came up with a lot of makeshift types of equipment to shoot the matches as they had to make sure that they keep up with the dynamic pace of the sport. “You have to make sure you are not shooting it like television,” he shared as he added that unlike real-life sports, here, they had the opportunity to get close shots of the players and introduce the audience to their inner monologue. Sudeep said that the movements and the matches were so well-rehearsed that they knew exactly how the actor was going to move and so they could shoot it accordingly.

Chak De India is famously known for casting actors and hockey players both in its cast. Actors were given training of the sport and players were given acting training.
