Actor Raveena Tandon spoke about the career decline of her frequent co-star in the 1990s, Govinda, and said that the kind of movies for which he’s perfectly suited aren’t being made any more. She said that she maintains a friendship with Govinda, and praised him as being the most talented actor of his generation. Govinda has experienced a drastic decline in stardom in the last decade, and has often implied that there is a conspiracy afoot to harm his career.

In an interview with The Lallantop, Raveena was asked about her streak of hits with Govinda, called Chi Chi by his friends, and his apparent fall from grace. Pushing back on the suggestion, she said, “The kind of films where Chi Chi’s talent can be perfectly used aren’t being made any more. I don’t think this industry has ever seen an actor as talented as Chi Chi. I have never seen an actor who can make the audience laugh and cry in the same scene. I was in awe of him. He could transform a comedic scene into an emotional one so effortlessly. Everything I know about comic timing I’ve learned from him. Nobody can compare to him.”

Raveena said that she remains friendly with Govinda. They starred in films such as Anari No. 1, Akhiyon Se Goli Maare, Aunty No 1, Dulhe Raja and more. In interviews across the last few years, Govinda has strongly implied that he was shut out of the film industry, and that his films were denied a proper release. In a TOI interview, Govinda said that it was difficult for him to find work because of this. “Maybe people are jealous of the love I receive,” he said, adding that he has ‘suffered enough’ and would like for people to keep him out of their ‘politics and agendas’.

One of the biggest Hindi film stars of the 90s, Govinda was last seen in the 2019 dud Rangeela Raja. Raveena, on the other hand, is experiencing a new wave of success. She appeared in the blockbuster hit KGF: Chapter 2, led the Netflix series Aranyak, and is poised to star in the Disney+ Hotstar show Karmma Calling.
