This sleek suit didn’t just fall out of a coconut tree.
Kamala Harris is known for her love of a trouser suit, and while she stepped out in yet another tailored look on night one of the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago Monday, this time her outfit held a deeper meaning.
The vice president departed from the typical political convention shades of navy, white or red by wearing a custom tan Chloé blazer and matching pants to take the stage at the DNC — and the ensemble nodded to both former President Obama and one of her viral speeches.
Chloé described the hue of her separates (like this similar $3,390 jacket) as “coconut brown,” an interesting tidbit since one of Harris’ 2023 speeches went viral for an analogy referencing the tropical fruit.
While discussing an initiative to advance opportunities for Hispanic Americans, she noted that “none of us just live in a silo,” going on to tell a story about her late mom, Shyamala Gopalan Harris.
“My mother used to — she would give us a hard time sometimes, and she would say to us, ‘I don’t know what’s wrong with you young people. You think you just fell out of a coconut tree?'” the democratic party presidential nominee said.

Harris explained, “You exist in the context of all in which you live and what came before you.”
But the meaning behind her DNC outfit doesn’t end there.
Former President Barack Obama was heavily criticized for wearing a tan suit to a 2014 press conference discussing ISIS threats, with many calling the look “unpresidential” and too casual.
Plenty of social media users shared their thoughts on Harris’ take on the summery suit, like one who tweeted, “I like Presidents that wear tan suits” while sharing side-by-side pics of Harris and Obama.
“Possibly the best unintentional trolling tonight was Kamala Harris in the tan suit, lol” another X user posted, while a third person wrote of the coconut-colored suit, “I actually have zero doubt that was not a coincidence. This campaign has been like searching for Easter eggs in your favorite movies!!”
Perhaps Harris will go for a lime green suit in honor of her connection to Charli XCX’s “Brat” soon enough.
