A new documentary series about the legendary writer duo Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar, named Angry Young Men, is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video. The show also features their children, Salman Khan, Farhan Akhtar and Zoya Akhtar, recalling stories about growing up with the illustrious writers. At the peak of their success, they delivered a string of hits and were reported to be charging more than the biggest heroes of the time.

In the series, Salim Khan has opened up about leaving behind his privileged life in Indore and coming to Mumbai to try his hand at becoming an actor. He became nostalgic as he talked about struggling to make ends meet. Salim Khan recalled how, upon arriving in the city of dreams, he lived at a guesthouse in the Marine Drive area, where he paid Rs 55 rent per month for half a room. He said, “My first ambition was to rent the entire room for Rs 110, but that wish was never fulfilled.”

Leaving behind the security of his family home, Salim said he had to endure a lot of trials and tribulations in Mumbai. However, it all felt worth it when he met Salma Khan, who lived in the neighbourhood. He was 24, and she was 17. Opening up about his relationship with Salma, who was named Sushila Charak before she tied the knot with him, he shared that things were quite easy when they started going out. However, when Salma’s family got to know about their relationship, they asked her to either get married to Salim or they’d marry her off to someone else. Salim had earlier opened up about how his religion became a point of contention for her family, and that they weren’t satisfied by his financial standing either.

Opening up about how his financial conditions added a lot of pressure on his flourishing relationship with Salma, he shared, “Thodi si paiso ya job ki pareshaani toh hoti hi hai-ki kya hoga kaise hoga? (There were always concerns about money or job security–how would things work out?)”. He also shared how he took up various jobs to plough through. While his first love was films, he also appeared in cigarette and clothing advertisements to earn a living. The couple tied the knot in 1964 and welcomed their first son, Salman Khan, in 1965.
