The winners of the 70th National Film Awards were announced in New Delhi today, celebrating the best of Indian cinema that was certified in the year 2022. At the ceremony, Rishab Shetty received the Best Actor award for Kantara, the Malayalam film Aattam was adjudged the Best Film, and Nithya Menen and Mansi Parekh shared the Best Actress honour.

However, not many are aware that the National Film Awards also have a cash component. The Dadasaheb Phalke Award, being the top cinematic honour in the country, comes with prize money of Rs 15 lakh. Next in the line is Swarna Kamal or Golden Lotus, which bestows a cash prize of Rs 3 lakh, while the Rajat Kamal winners receive Rs 2 lakh, across categories.

Swarna Kamal is given to the following categories: Best Film, Debut Film, Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment, Best Director, and Best Children’s Film. This year, the awardees under these categories are Aattam’s producer (Joy Movie Productions) and director (Anand Ekarshi). It will also be awarded to Fouja’s director Pramod Kumar. The Haryanvi film won the Best Debut Film of a Director.

For Kantara, which won Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment category, both the producer (Hombale Films LLP) and director (Rishab Shetty) will win the cash award of Rs 3 lakh.

The producer (Dharma Productions, Prime Focus, Starlight Pictures) and director (Ayan Mukerji) for the Hindi film Brahmastra-Part 1: Shiva–Best Film in AVGC (Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming and Comic) and director Sooraj R Barjatya for Uunchai, which won Best Direction award, will also receive Swarna Kamal.

Meanwhile, Rajat Kamal is given to winners of Best Feature Film Promoting National, Social, and Environmental Values, all acting categories, best screenplay, music, and similar categories. For example, this year, Rishab Shetty (Best Actor), Nithya Menen and Manasi Parekh (Best Actress), Pavan Raj Malhotra and Neena Gupta (Best Actor and Actress in Supporting Roles), Arijit Singh (Best Male Playback Singer) and all the Best Films in regional languages, among others, received the Rajat Kamal for their contributions.

On the other hand, Manoj Bajpayee and music director Sanjoy Salil Chowdhury received certificates and no monetary awards for their contribution in Gulmohar (Hindi) and Kadhikan (Malayalam), respectively, as special mentions.

While this is the cash awards component in India’s National Film Awards, at the Cannes Film Festival, the winner of the Grand Prix receives EUR 15,000. Meanwhile, EUR 11,250 and EUR 7,500, are given to the second and third prize winners, respectively. This year the prize was given to India’s Payal Kapadia for her film All We Imagine As Light.

The Berlin International Film Festival aka Berlinale has several awards with monetary prizes. The Berlinale Documentary Award, established in 2017, awards the winner with EUR 40,000. The prize is split between the winning film’s director and producer. Similarly, the winner of Best First Feature Award receives a monetary prize of EUR 50,000, which again is split between the winning film’s director and producer. The award is given to debut feature films in the Competition, Encounters, Panorama, Forum, and Generation sections. The highest prize in Berlinale is the Golden Bear.

In the case of the Oscars, there are no monetary awards but goodie bags are handed over to the ceremony’s host, along with 25 Oscar nominees in the acting and directing categories. These packages consist of luxurious items, vacations, cosmetics, and much more, often costing several thousand dollars. At the Oscars this year, the swag bag was worth over $170,000, with the most expensive being a $50,000 trip to a luxury chalet in the Swiss Alps, as per Reuters.
