Actor-producer Kirti Kulhari has opened up about being stuck in a certain kind of role as an actor resulting in a lack of opportunities to showcase her acting prowess. Kirti was last seen in Khichdi: Mission Panthukistan, reprising her role as Parminder from Khichdi: The Movie (2010).

Kirti, who has had impactful roles in films like Pink (2016), Indu Sarkar (2017), Uri: The Surgical Strike (2019), and Mission Mangal (2019) and web shows like Four More Shots Please! (2019), Criminal Justice (2020) and Human (2022), says she tried her hands at doing comedy in Khichdi because that’s where she started her career from, in the first place, and because she wanted to break free from the “serious actor” tag.

Kirti Kulhari said, “It is the people’s perception that serious actors can do only intense roles well. This is not true for actors and unfortunately good actors get stuck to only serious, intense roles. But I think we are all capable of comedy as much. Having experimented with comedy, I would like to say that if this tag is taken off from us, we can do a lot more. It is about giving us an opportunity and I think there are directors who can see that, see beyond this, they can see what all you can do. I think those are the directors I want to work with.”

Kirti Kulhari is currently seen in Shekhar Home, a show based on the works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Talking about the series, the actor said, “I personally love the detective genre and in the last three-four-five years, when you open any of the OTT platforms, there’s a lot of investigative, detective content, which I, personally, absolutely enjoy watching. I also like the humour. Sherlock Holmes is one of my favourite things to watch. I totally love that world, that genre, what all is possible with it. I absolutely love it.”

While Kirti has done many films in her 15-year-long career as an actor, the actor says she feels blessed to be a part of several OTT shows because here she found the kind of work she was looking for.

She said, “OTT has really blessed us with a lot of opportunities which I think I had been looking for a while. So, it’s given me a lot in terms of just being out there and being able to showcase what I am capable of. But yes, there’s a lot of noise also because the quantity (of content) is a lot, so the quality suffers quite a bit, quite often. We are still wondering where to take small films and what to do with those films. I wish something also happens with them and in a way sort of opens up. Honestly, there are no complaints.”

“Life has been good and god has blessed me with a lot of good work and there’s more to come. But, I also feel there is a demarcation from the media side as to OTT stars versus film stars. I want to reach a point where all of this just ends and everyone is just spoken for who they are, rather than where their work is being showcased. So I hope we can reach a point where we are all able to be everywhere and be spoken about in the same platform sans all the segregation. People do it for their convenience, everyone likes to put everyone in a box. I think we need to bridge that gap and just see people for who they are and what they do,” Kirti concludes.
