It is almost serendipitous that Ajay Gnanamuthu’s next, Demonte Colony 2, is hitting the screens alongside Vikram’s Thangalaan. Ajay, who made a stellar debut with Demonte Colony, and followed it up with Nayanthara’s Imaikka Nodigal, collaborated with Vikram for the big-ticket actioner Cobra. However, the film ended up with mixed reviews and a lukewarm response at the box office. While Vikram moved on to make the two Ponniyin Selvan films and Thangalaan, Ajay returned to a space of familiarity to prove his credentials all over again with the sequel to Demonte Colony. During the promotions of the film, one question that continues to surround him at all times is ‘What went wrong with Cobra?’ and he has responded to the same in multiple interviews.

In a podcast interview with SS Music, the filmmaker opened up and said, “I went to the producer with an altogether different script, which was turned down. Later, I worked with a different writer on another script, which was also turned down. Since I was signed with the production house to do a film, the makers gave me a script and asked me to make a movie out of it. But I was not convinced.” Not delving deep into what exactly was the problem with the script he was given, Ajay simply said the core concept of the film had its set of flaws. “Of course, you can beautify the script with necessary embellishments in the screenplay, but what can you do about the core?” asked Ajay.

However, Ajay Gnanamuthu shared that the hesitancy about the project was overcome by the need to get it on floors because the pre-production work was going on for almost eight months. “We hardly had four months to shoot. When the producer was very sure about working on this script, every other cog in the wheel of the film was convinced about it. Since it was only me and my team who had a problem, we thought it just might not be them but us whose perspective needs to change,” said Ajay, who then worked with his team to develop the first and second halves of a one-line written by someone else. “That one line proved to be the costliest mistake. I should not have done that story.”

This honest opinion of Ajay has become a topic of discussion as netizens are polarised about the filmmaker throwing the producer under the bus, and the producer suppressing the filmmaker’s creative freedom. Meanwhile, Seven Screen Studios, the makers of Cobra, are now backing Pradeep Ranganathan-Vignesh Shivan’s Love Insurance Kompany, and Nayanthara’s next with Kavin, which will be directed by Vishnu Edavan, an erstwhile assistant of Lokesh Kanagaraj.
