The highly-anticipated eighth and final season of HBO’s Game of Thrones received harsh criticism for several creative choices, attracting backlash for creators David Benioff and DB Weiss. Actor Kit Harrington, who played Jon Snow on the hit fantasy drama, recently admitted that towards the end of the production, the cast and crew were all too tired to continue, and this may have led to the “rushed ending.”

“I think if there was any fault with the end of Thrones, is that we were all so f*cking tired, we couldn’t have gone on longer. And so I understand some people thought it was rushed and I might agree with them. But I’m not sure there was any alternative,” he told British GQ in a recent interview. The actor pointed out that working on the show for a decade drained him out, too. “I look at pictures of me in that final season and I look exhausted. I look spent. I didn’t have another season in me,” he added.  The Jon Snow spinoff series, which would have seen Kit reprising his role, has been shelved.

The finale season’s ending received negative reactions from fans and critics. Responding to the backlash that the season received, the actor added,  “Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I think there were mistakes made, story-wise, towards the end maybe. I think there were some interesting choices that didn’t quite work.”

Earlier this year, Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss broke their silence on backlash and fan reactions, highlighting how the aggressively negative response impacted them. “You always hope everyone’s going to love anything you do and it would’ve been great if 100 percent of people loved it, but they didn’t. You can get so bogged down in public opinion that you spend your whole life googling things and trying to find people who felt one way or the other way,” Benioff told The Hollywood Reporter in a January interview.

Game of Thrones’ concluding episode, The Iron Throne, ignited a firestorm of controversy unprecedented in television history, overshadowing the backlash surrounding the finales of both The Sopranos and Lost. The overwhelming negative fan reaction was so intense that series creators Benioff and Weiss withdrew from a scheduled appearance at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019. In a show of defiance, over a million fans signed a petition demanding a complete rewrite of the poorly received eighth season.
