Actor Taapsee Pannu’s riveting turn as an unsatisfied wife, whose love story culminates in a sinister outcome in Haseen Dillruba, was almost not meant to be. The actor has revealed that before she came on board the 2021 Netflix thriller, screenwriter Kanika Dhillon had approached another actor for the part of Rani Saxena from Haseen Dillruba.

“I had heard from Kanika that she has a story of this sort,” Taapsee Pannu told Indianexpress.com as she recalled the first time she had heard of the idea, which eventually became Haseen Dillruba, co-starring Vikrant Massey and directed by Vinil Mathew.

“I had told Kanika that I was keen to hear it, but I went to shoot a film and when I returned, I learned that she had already narrated the film to some other actor and they were proceeding to lock things soon,” she added. Even though Taapsee Pannu didn’t reveal any name, it has long been reported that actor Kriti Sanon was approached for the film.

Taapsee said it was only after a few months that she again got a call from Kanika, who asked her to come to the office for the script narration without “asking me any more questions.” The actor said, “When she ended the narration, I just laughed. I told her, ‘Ye meri kismat mein thi (I was meant to do this film), I had told you before.’ It was an instant yes from my side.”

The actor said getting cast for a film like Haseen Dillruba was new for her, as well as the makers because no one could view her in the zone of a pulpy romantic thriller. Taapsee said the film something “no one imagined me to do.”

“I am not the ideal cast for it, apart from the grey part of it. Because anything grey, that is not right on paper, I am the go-to person. Apart from that, nothing was suiting my casting in the film. That was probably why I was excited.

“Because then I would approach it in a way that won’t be expected or be the most ideal way of doing it. When I do it, it will be different than someone who is ideally perfect for a role like this. I thought this would be a great opportunity to test myself and I discovered so much more about what I can potentially do.”

Taapsee Pannu is now gearing up for the film’s sequel, Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba, to release on August 9. The actor credited the “noise” Haseen Dillruba generated for creating a way for the sequel.

“The release was followed by all sorts of reactions. It was the first time (in my career) that I realised how much noise a film can make, in a good or bad way, and eventually, all that noise gave us fodder to get into part two.

“If you are not affecting or impacting, nobody will make that noise for you. Usually, I have been fortunate with critics and film journalists but when this came, it was the first time I saw the audience picking up my film way higher than what critics did and taking it to a part two,” she added.

Directed by Jayprad Desai, Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba reunites Taapsee and Vikrant and sees a new addition in the cast, actor Sunny Kaushal.
