Just days before its release, John Abraham and Sharvari’s upcoming film Vedaa received clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and has been granted a U/A certificate. However, over 9 minutes of the film have reportedly been deleted by the Revising Committee (RC), and the makers have been asked to add a 1-minute and 16-second long modified disclaimer and voiceover at the beginning of the film.

According to Bollywood Hungama, the board made several small changes to the film. For instance, the makers were asked to modify a dialogue with derogatory references towards women and social identity. A 2-minute and 16-second long hanging scene was deleted. Although Vedaa is set in Rajasthan, the board asked the makers to mute the word ‘Jodhpur’ from the Jodhpur High Court. They also demanded that the violence scene in the court be reduced by 30 percent, chopping 6 minutes and 15 seconds from the film.

The board also deleted an audio track of Sanskrit shlokas from the film, modified an abusive word, blurred visuals of the tearing of currency notes, and removed the text information stating ‘Brahmin son…Shudra’s son.’ This amounted to 9 minutes and 14 seconds of cuts. After the cuts suggested by the board, the runtime of “Vedaa” comes to 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Vedaa got CBFC certification days after the makers complained about an ‘unusual delay’ from the board to clear the film. A part of their statement read, “Adhering to protocols, we applied for a certificate well before the prescribed eight weeks to release. Our film was screened for the CBFC on June 25th. Post this, we were advanced to a revising committee review without any explanation as to what the esteemed examining committee’s concerns or objections were. Since then, we have waited patiently for a revising committee to be constituted, impressed on all respected and honourable office bearers and repeatedly daily documented our appeal for certification, consideration or even an explanation. Despite this unusual delay, we have full faith in the system in place and are confident that the CBFC will oblige us rightfully.”.

Directed by Nikkhil Advani, Vedaa is based on the subject of caste discrimination and untouchability and follows the story of an ex-Army officer and an ordinary girl who join hands to fight against systematic oppression. The film stars Abhishek Banerjee in a negative role and Tamannaah Bhatia as John’s love interest. It will release in theatres on August 15.
