Red Chillies VFX has shared a video breakdown of the visual effects work that went into last year’s biggest Indian film, the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Jawan. Directed by Atlee, the vigilante action film went on to gross over Rs 1100 crore globally, emerging as the most successful film of SRK’s career. Jawan told the story of a vigilante police officer who leads a team of female prisoners in carrying out socially conscious heists. Along the way, he reunites with his father, also played by SRK.

The three-minute VFX breakdown provides insight into several key moments from the film, revealing that the exterior of the metro train in the opening sequence was entirely computer-generated. The prison where a lot of the film’s action takes place was partially constructed, but enhanced through visual effects. The cottage where Vikram Rathore lived with his wife, played by Deepika Padukone, was created entirely with the help of visual effects. One of the most interesting details revealed in the breakdown video is that the cigar that Vikram smokes in the film was computer-generated, at least in the one shot shown in the video.

It is further revealed that SRK performed some of the stunts himself, especially in the truck heist sequence. One shot of Vikram on the bike, however, was fully CG, including SRK himself. The video ends by pulling the curtain on how the fan-favourite moment in which Vikram ignites a spark with his cigar was created. As it turns out, it was a combination of SRK on set, wearing a harness, and fully CG shots of vehicles.

Fans were very impressed with what they saw. One person wrote in the comments section, “Jawan had some of the best VFX ever for an Indian movie. Even the scenes where physics were defied, the realism of the VFX grounded everything.. and made shots believable. Great job by the VFX team.. absolute world-class quality.” Another fan commented, “How some of shots even while being a VGX artist on this movie thought were practical even they turned out to be CG.”

Also starring Vijay Sethupathi as the villain, alongside Nayanthara, Sanya Malhotra, Ridhi Dogra, and others, Jawan came on the heels of Pathaan, which also grossed over Rs 1000 crore worldwide. Shah Rukh ended his year with Dunki, which has made Rs 460 crore globally so far, emerging as the third-biggest film of his career.
