National Award-winning actor Vikram is known for giving his all to every role he plays. It is almost a given that if a role requires an actor to undergo a physical and mental transformation, there is one name that springs up in everyone’s mind — Vikram.  Speaking at the audio launch of the much-anticipated Thangalaan, Vikram didn’t shy away from calling a spade a spade, and said Thangalaan was easily the toughest role he has done so far.

He said, “Of course, I have done films like Sethu, Pithamagan, Anniyan, I, and Raavanan. All of them were huge struggles, and required a lot of involvement from my side. But honestly, they were all just 8-10 % of what Thangalaan put me through.”

Drawing parallels between his own journey, and the character arc of the titular role in Pa Ranjith’s film, Vikram went on a heartfelt trip down memory lane that shocked some, surprised some others, got many others’ teared up and left everyone in awe. “I was spiritually connected to Thangalaan. Yes, he is a leader, a warrior, etc… But what really defines him is his doggedness in reaching the goal in his head. Even when everyone around him says it is unattainable, he believes he can reach it. So did I,” said a vehement Vikram, nonchalantly talking about the time when doctors told his mother that there was no chance he would walk again.

“All I wanted to do in my life was to act. Right after winning the Best Actor award in a college play, I broke my leg. I spent 3 years in and out of hospitals. I had 23 surgeries, and had to walk with a crutch. Doctors said I couldn’t walk properly anymore. But I was crazy,” said an emotional Vikram, who displayed the raw passion that has driven his 32-year-old career. “When I started walking and got acting opportunities, I thought it would all be okay. But then followed 10 years of relentless failures. Everyone once again said I wouldn’t make it. But the dream continued. The struggle continued. And now, I am here on this stage. This passion is what drives Thangalaan too.”

Thanking his fans for their constant support, encouragement, and unadulterated love, Vikram asserted that this was the gift he received for pursuing his passion. Signing off, a contemplative Vikram said, “But what if I didn’t get this success? I guess I’d still be trying to act in cinema.”
