With Robert Downey Jr returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), not as Iron Man but as the supervillain Doctor Doom, the multiverse is set to expand further. The recently released Deadpool and Wolverine, starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in the titular roles, offered further glimpses into this expansion. The Shawn Levy directorial also featured cameo appearances by many beloved actors, including some previously tied to the MCU.

Now, Levy has now revealed some of the film’s spoilers, including Henry Cavill’s cameo as a Wolverine variant named “Cavillrine”. What adds to the intrigue is that Cavill was once a prominent figure in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), where he portrayed Superman aka Clark Kent since 2013’s Man of Steel, directed by Zack Snyder. This crossover has since garnered reactions from various industry figures, including Snyder.

Mentioning that it was Ryan Reynolds who “brilliantly” named Cavill’s Logan “the Cavillrine,” Levy told The New York Times, “In the case of Henry, it was not long after everything went down with DC and word came that Henry was being replaced as Superman. Given that Deadpool is in constant conversation with culture, it felt like a great opportunity to first of all cast Henry Cavill in a part that he would kick ass at, but also to poke fun at that other comic-book-founded movie studio and play with some self-awareness there.” In 2022, DC co-chairman and co-CEO James Gunn announced Cavill would not return as Superman, as a new Superman film was being developed.

“I think we all were (willing to see what Henry would do with the character Wolverine), including poor Henry Cavill, who not only had that pumped-up muscular body but kept that cigar lit and in his mouth for the entirety of the shoot day,” he added.

On Monday, Cavill took to Instagram to share a glimpse of his cameo. Posting a photo of himself as Cavillrine with a cigar, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare actor humorously noted, “To be safe, I shaved the moustache off for this one. Just the moustache.” This caption playfully references the 2017 controversy over his moustache during the filming of Mission: Impossible – Fallout.

Regarding this incident, Empire Online reported in 2018 that while Cavill had grown a moustache for Fallout, the DC superhero film Justice League ended up requiring major re-shoots, for which the actor needed to be clean-shaven. However, since Fallout’s shooting was ongoing, DC had to digitally erase the moustache from Cavill’s extra scenes.

On Cavill’s appearance as Cavillrine, Reynolds told Collider: “It was the first day of shooting and it was born of the reality which is who on earth do you cast? I can’t think of a more impossible and frustrating role to recast than Wolverine. I don’t know. As an actor, it would be awful and intimidating, and you’d need to take it in a different way. But if you had to do it, and replace the guy who’s made it canon in every way, shape, and form on-screen and off wasn’t available, Henry Cavill would be pretty good!”

Meanwhile, director Zack Snyder, who created films like Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Justice League for the DCEU, and announced the end of his Snyderverse in 2023, commented on Cavill’s MCU debut. “I haven’t seen it yet, but I did hear about it. Sounds fun,” he said during a chat with The Hollywood Reporter.

“Well, Henry is an amazing Superman to me, obviously. I hired him. I wanted him to be Superman. So any coins left on the table are unfortunate, and in that way, it would be great to have more Henry. I always think you could have more Henry,” he said in response to a query on Cavill being replaced as Superman.
