Five years back when Puri Jagannadh gave us iSmart Shankar, it was a first-of-its-kind film that answered a question that no one asked — can you make a mass masala sci-fi film that is also quintessentially Telugu in its DNA? While the template borrows from the Indian horror cinema trope where a soul enters the protagonist to fulfil its wishes, the over-the-top masalafication of the genre made iSmart Shankar a commercial success. Now, five years later, Ram and Puri are back with the sequel to the film, Double iSmart, and from the trailer, it is clear they have dialled up the OTT-ness to astronomical levels.

In iSmart Shankar, we saw an honest cop’s memories being transferred to the street-smart Shankar. This time around, Big Bull (Sanjay Dutt), a dreaded gangster wants to be immortal, and the scientists, for whatever reason, believe memory transfer is the only way, and no points for guessing who they call? The explosive Double iSmart trailer gives us all that we need to decide if this film is going to be our cup of masala chai or not. We have garden variety misogyny, random comedy sequences featuring Ali, logic and gravity-defying action sequences filmed with a lot of conviction, a flashback that will showcase Shankar’s childhood, and of course, the film becomes glamour central ft. the picturisation of the songs and Kavya Thapar.

Here’s the trailer

This film is billed to be the comeback of both Ram and Puri, who are in search of a much-needed win at the box-office. Many netizens expressed their support for both the actor and the filmmaker, and hoped a comeback was on the cards. They pegged Double iSmart as a sureshot blockbuster, and it will break many records. However, many expressed concerns about the content. Some hoped Ram would understand his potential, and work on films that tested his talents and not the audience’s patience. Some others said it was old wine in a new bottle, and they expected something fresh from this combination.

Backed by Puri Jagannadh and Charmme Kaur, Double iSmart has music by Mani Sharma, and features Bani J, Sayaji Shinde and Makarand Deshpande in pivotal roles. The film, which is slated for an August 15 release, will clash at the box-office with Ravi Teja’s Mr Bachchan.
