Actor Dimple Kapadia has had an eventful life both personally and professionally. She was earmarked as a future star after her debut in the 1970s, but her career came to an abrupt halt when she married the much senior superstar Rajesh Khanna. When his career spiralled and he became self-consumed, she left him and re-started her professional journey. In an interview some years ago, Dimple spoke about the hardships of raising her two daughters – Twinkle and Rinke – as a single mother, and said that she is blessed to have had them.
At a FICCI FLO event in Jaipur, conducted in 2019, Dimple was asked how she managed to raise Twinkle and Rinke to be decent people despite her personal troubles. She said, “I swear to God I did nothing. I just let them be. Live and let live. I don’t think I even sermonised much, and by God’s grace, it all worked out absolutely fine. Children also imbibe a lot from what they see in life, the things that happen in everyday life. I was blessed to have good children. I wouldn’t say that I contributed. No, I didn’t.”

Asked who among her and Twinkle is more like a mom to the other, she said, “Of course Twinkle, it’s evident. She’s a big bully. It is her all the way. She’s an amazing child. She must have been all of seven or eight when I got separated. The kind of maturity… She was only wanting to take care of me, to see if I was okay, if everything was alright with me. There are lots of things I can’t say because of you know what… But she was like my friend. Then she turned into a monster mother.”

Dimple also shared a word of advice for single mothers out there, while admitting that she didn’t face half the difficulties that other single moms might. She said, “It’s all about compassion, empathy, and understanding that we are all one. It’s difficult to explain to common people what (being a single parent is like). It’s very hard being a single parent. I didn’t have to face any of it, because I was fortunate. But people don’t give you apartments, they don’t give you a membership because you’re a single woman. It’s ridiculous. But it’s completely reversed now. They don’t have to worry, just know that you need to keep your power with you and that you are all amazing.”
