Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has commented on the criticism that his Tamil thriller Maharaja has received, acknowledging that a section of the viewers was “trigged” by the Vijay Sethupathi starrer. In the film, which has been garnering acclaim and record views on Netflix, Kashyap plays the antagonist.

While Maharaja was praised for its screenplay and performances, it was also heavily criticised for the manner in which the film showed violence, especially towards women. In an interview with The Hindu, Kashyap addressed the criticism by drawing a parallel with that of Karan Johar-Guneet Monga backed Kill, which was billed as the goriest Hindi film of recent times.

“My latest Tamil flick, like Kill, has drawn a lot of criticism for its violent scenes, but that’s okay because some films will trigger something. I believe violence should look so real and extreme that it actually stops you from doing it,” the director shared.

Anurag Kashyap then went on to praise Malayalam cinema, and noted how the makers there are the ones interested in telling “original” stories. This year alone, the Malayalam film industry has seen hits like Manjummel Boys, The Goat Life, Aavesham, Premalu and Bramayugam among others.

“I watch more Malayalam movies than Hindi these days because they excite me so much more. People here (in the Malayalam film industry) tell original stories that are unique to each individual. The filmmakers are catering to themselves rather than the market. A movie like Bhramayugam will never be made in black and white in any other industry. It shows that they’re making the films they truly want to make

“Even the commercial films are genuinely entertaining. In a movie like Avesham, they did not hesitate to cast three influencers in key roles,” he points out. “In Bollywood, they would fill these roles with big stars, focusing on star power rather than telling a real story,” he added.

The filmmaker said the problem with the Hindi film industry is that it often relies on formulas and will break free from the pattern when an original work comes out, such as Laapataa Ladies, 12th Fail or Kill, which Kashyap said was an action movie which was “very unique” in itself.
