Playback singer Sunidhi Chauhan, renowned for delivering chart-topping tracks year after year, is celebrated for her distinct voice and mastery over a wide range of notes, from heart-thumping highs to deep lows. In a recent interview, Sunidhi addressed the use of auto-tune in playback singing, acknowledging its role while also cautioning against overuse as it can lead to a homogenisation of voices.

In a conversation with Raj Shamani, Sunidhi was asked about her use of auto-tune. She clarified, “I don’t use auto-tune, though others do. If it’s my work, I might sing 100 times to ensure it sounds right, but I won’t rely on auto-tune.” Sunidhi’s videos showcasing her pitch-perfect singing and electrifying dance performances at her concerts frequently go viral on social media.

Discussing auto-tune further and her problem with the tool, the singer said, “Auto tune is an effect that makes a voice shine a little more. These days they use it everywhere. My problem with it is that when it is used on everybody’s voice, all the voices sound same. If you get three female singers for a song and use auto tune in each of their voices, it won’t be exactly the same but there will be similarity. I have experienced that. Auto tune isn’t bad. If you use the technology in the right way, it only enhances the project.”

The “Beedi Jalaile” singer also pointed out that auto-tune has become so ubiquitous that many singers now view it as a fundamental tool. “I’ve heard so many singers walk into the studio and ask, ‘I’m going to go on the mic, but there’s auto-tune, right?’ It has become a basic expectation,” she added.

In an earlier interview, Arijit Singh also spoke about auto tune and how music director AR Rahman was the first one to use it. Speaking to the YouTube channel The Music Podcast, Arijit said, “Auto-tune can’t turn a non-singer into a singer. It’s not like that you sing anything, apply auto-tune and it will sound like it’s in tune. It’s not possible.” Explaining different settings of the tool, Arijit added that Rahman found a way to use it and that really worked with the audience. “When people really liked to listen to Rahman’s songs, it was him actually who started using auto-tune in a very subtle way. That’s how a lot of singers started sounding beautiful,” he added.
