The Ajay Devgn and Tabu-starrer romantic thriller Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha, directed by Neeraj Panday, is headed for a disastrous debut at the box office. The film is releasing alongside the Janhvi Kapoor-starrer Ulajh, which is eyeing an even poorer box office debut. Both movies will be released on Friday, two weeks prior to Stree 2’s debut, and a week after the Hollywood hit Deadpool & Wolverine delivered one of the top openings of the year.
According to a Bollywood Hungama report, Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha has sold less than 1000 tickets across the three national theatre chains a day before release. The movie was originally supposed to debut a week after Kalki 2898 AD opened to record numbers, but was delayed to protect it from being completely trampled. The report added that Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha’s opening could ‘send shock waves’ across the industry, which has been reeling from high-profile duds this year.

Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha is tracking behind even Sarfira, the Akshay Kumar-starrer that delivered his worst opening in around 15 years, and made only around Rs 20 crore in its lifetime run. While Akshay has been having a difficult time at the box office in the last few years, Ajay Devgn and Tabu are both coming off hits this year. Ajay starred in the blockbuster Shaitaan, while Tabu appeared in Crew. In the last couple of years, Ajay and Tabu have delivered other hits such as Drishyam 2 and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2.
Janhvi Kapoor, on the other hand, has been struggling at the box office for years. After delivering her one and only hit back in 2018, she has appeared in a string of streaming projects. Her last couple of theatrical releases – Mili and Mr & Mrs Mahi – both under-performed at the box office. According to Bollywood Hungama, Ulajh has only sold around 750 tickets across India ahead of its debut. Going by an average ticket cost of Rs 250, this translates to less than Rs 2 lakh. A top makeup artist in Bollywood would make this much in two days.
Janhvi will hope for long-awaited box office success with her first mainstream South Indian film, Devara, which stars Jr NTR in the lead role. Ulajh also stars Gulshan Devaiah and Roshan Mathew.
