Actor-writer Piyush Mishra apologised unconditionally for appearing in the recent film Jahangir National University, a controversial political drama that was labelled a propaganda film by its critics. He said that his simmering bitterness for Communists prompted him to accept the role, without even reading the entire script. He said that while no love is lost between him and left-liberals, doing the film was a mistake.

In an interview with Dainik Jagran, Piyush Mishra was asked about his Communist past, and he said that he didn’t know any better back then. He said that while he didn’t agree with Communist ideology even then, he had no choice but to follow others around him because he had no personality of his own. After denouncing material wealth for several years, he went to Mumbai and finally started making money, and by then, his feelings for Communism had been marred irrevocably.

“The ideology seeped in. I didn’t take up work in Mumbai, I turned down money. But when I didn’t have food to feed myself, I realised that this ideology was empty. I studied further, and discovered that many people are disillusioned by this ideology. It was because of this bitterness that I did the film JNU,” he said.

He continued, “I unconditionally apologise for this. I did it because of bitterness. I am very sorry. We all make mistakes, it doesn’t matter who we are or how old we are. It was a moment of foolishness, and I made a foolish decision. This was the first film I agreed to without reading the script. I have only one scene in the movie, even though they tried to sell it on my name. I realised that holding onto resentment only makes you a bitter person.”

Piyush Mishra said that he still doesn’t like ‘leftists’, because he knows what they’ve done to him. “Usme koi compromise nahi hai, mujhe maalum hai leftists ki aukaat kya hai (There is no compromise on this front, I know the truth about leftists),” he said, repeating that it was a mistake to do the movie. JNU also starred Urvashi Rautela, Rashami Desai, Vijay Raaz and Ravi Kishan.
