It has been a sad Tuesday in Kerala as tragedy struck in the tourist-friendly location of Wayanad. Massive landslides in the area have resulted in at least 50 deaths, and many others reported missing near Meppadi in Wayanad district. With over 250 people stranded in the affected areas, the rescue efforts by the joint operations by the NDRF, Army, and local officials have been hindered due to bad weather. Joining the voices expressing concern about the calamity, actor-politicians Kamal Haasan and Vijay took to their social media accounts to share a message to the government.

Both the superstars shared their grief about the tragedy unfolding in Wayanad, and expressed their condolences to the bereaved families. Kamal Haasan, in his X post, also pressed on the urgency of understanding climate change, and acting on it immediately. He wrote, “The disasters caused by the landslides in Wayanad and Valparai of Kerala make my heart ache. My deepest condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones, homes and belongings. Natural disasters have become a regular occurrence due to climate change. It is imperative that we all work together to understand the impact of this. I would like to express my gratitude to the army and the dedicated state government employees who risked their lives to rescue the people in difficult and dangerous situations. I request the central government to speed up the rescue work.”

Meanwhile, Vijay pressed on the government to provide relief on a war-footing, and wrote, “Deeply saddened on hearing the tragic news of the landslide in Wayanad, Kerala. My thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families. Request the Government authorities that the necessary rescue and relief measures be provided to the affected on a war-footing (sic).”

It is to be noted that the army has deployed over 200 soldiers from the Defence Security Corps and a medical team to assist with the rescue operations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs. 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the families of each deceased individual, along with Rs 50,000 for those injured. Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition and former Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi extended his heartfelt condolences, and urged the Union Government to provide all necessary support for rescue and medical care and to release compensation promptly to the families of the deceased.

Sharing the visuals from the state, many netizens have united to express their solidarity for the people affected by the Wayanad landslide, and are hoping for the weather to relent to aid in improving the rescue efforts.
