In a rare interview conducted outside the film promotions cycle, actor Ranbir Kapoor spoke about his work, his ambitions as an actor, and his personal life. Ranbir also shared how one emotional meeting with superstar Aamir Khan changed his perspective about the profession of acting, and the turmoil of chasing stardom. He said that after the interaction with a deeply regretful Aamir, he decided to maintain a balance between his professional and personal lives.

In a conversation with entrepreneur Nikhil Kamath, the famously enigmatic Ranbir opened up about something that Aamir said to him about the regrets that he has in his life. Opening up about how much hard work goes in making films and acting in them, Ranbir shared, “I know Mr Aamir Khan, when I meet him now… I met him two years back… he was in hears, I asked him what happened, and he’s like, ‘I have spent 30 years of my life and the only relationship I’ve had is with my audience, I don’t have a relationship with my children, I don’t have a relationship with my mother, with his ex-wife (Kiran Rao), she was his wife then.”

Revealing what Aamir’s words meant to him, he said, “That’s what this profession takes. You have to give it all. So the endeavour is also to kind of balance your reel life with your real life and not get swayed by this ambition. I don’t want to get swayed by ambition.” Aamir spoke about these regrets in an appearance on Koffee with Karan, and said, “A year ago, I went through a lot of introspection. I felt I did not nurture my relationships like my work. I realised that I’ve not spent so much time with Ira and Junaid since they were children.” He added, “Now, in the last months, I’m a changed person. I connect more with my family, my children, Kiran’s parents, Reena’s parents, my mother, sister and brother. I would have liked to spend much more time with them at the cost of my work. But at that time, I was just so passionately following what I was doing.”

On the work front Ranbir was last seen in Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal, and will next be seen in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Love and War with Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal. After that, he’ll star in Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana, with Sai Pallavi. Aamir, on the other hand, took a brief break after the commercial failure of his Forrest Gump remake, Laal Singh Chaddha. He will next star in Sitaare Zameen Par, set to release later this year.
