Following the massive failure of the action thriller The Ghost in 2022, Telugu superstar Nagarjuna is back with the period action drama Naa Saami Ranga. Helmed by Vijay Binni, Naa Saami Ranga is an official remake of the 2019 Malayalam film Porinju Mariam Jose.

For Nagarjuna, who had been working nonstop for the past two and a half months, the release of the movie has provided a much-needed break, during which he had previously planned to travel to the Maldives for holidays. However, the actor recently revealed that he has dropped the plan due to the ongoing tensions between India and the Maldives.

During a recent interview with lyricists MM Keeravaani and Chandrabose, Nagarjuna, as reported by Hindustan Times, said, “I was working for 75 days for Big Boss and Naa Saami Ranga without a break. Now, I have cancelled my Maldives trip and am looking to go to Lakshadweep next week. I did not cancel it because of fear or anything. I cancelled the tickets because it is not healthy.”

Addressing the controversy sparked by Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu’s cabinet ministers using “undiplomatic words” against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indians in general, Nagarjuna emphasised, “Whatever they have said or the statements they have made were not healthy at all, and it’s not right. He is our Prime Minister. He is leading 1.5 billion people. They are facing the repercussions. For every action, there is a reaction.”

The row peaked recently when three Maldivian ministers passed derogatory statements against Modi after he shared glimpses from his visit to the Lakshadweep islands, promoting tourism. Some prominent Maldivian social media users also responded to Modi’s post with alleged “offensive, racist, xenophobic and derogatory” comments.

Among them was Mariyam Shiuna, Maldives’ Deputy Minister of Youth Empowerment, Information and Arts, who wrote: “What a clown. The puppet of Israel Mr. Narendra diver with life jacket. #VisitMaldives #SunnySideOfLife.” In a now-deleted post, Shiuna also compared India to cow dung.
