“I’ll stand on the ocean until I start sinking, but I’ll know my song well before I start singing,” croons Timothée Chalamet as he channels Bob Dylan in the teaser for the highly-anticipated biopic A Complete Unknown. Written and directed by James Mangold, famed for Ford vs Ferrari, Logan and Walk The Line, the film promises to dive deep into Dylan’s transformative journey.
The teaser opens with Timothée Chalamet walking the streets of Manhattan while American singer Pete Seeger (portrayed by Edward Norton) narrates his experience of first hearing Bob Dylan and recognising his potential to shape the future. The clip highlights some of Dylan’s favourite Manhattan haunts, including Cafe Wha? and Hotel Chelsea. Chalamet, embodying Dylan’s iconic look with tousled hair, sunglasses, and a harmonica, is shown performing “A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall” and transitioning from a young folk singer in Greenwich Village to an international music icon.
The teaser also hints at a love triangle involving Dylan, singer Joan Baez (played by Monica Barbaro), and Sylvie Russo (played by Elle Fanning), who seems to be a fictionalized version of Dylan’s then-girlfriend Suze Rotolo.
The film’s official synopsis reads, “Set in the influential New York music scene of the early 60s, A COMPLETE UNKNOWN follows 19-year-old Minnesota musician BOB DYLAN’s (Timothée Chalamet) meteoric rise as a folk singer to concert halls and the top of the charts – his songs and mystique becoming a worldwide sensation – culminating in his groundbreaking electric rock and roll performance at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965.”
Fans are super excited for Dylan’s biographical drama. A fan lauded Chalamet and wrote, “The way he blinks while singing is so Bob, I’m thrilled.” Another fan wrote, “Judging by the facial expressions while singing I can tell Timothée has put on the work, that along with the cinematography and a trailer that is not too flashy makes me think we’re in for a treat!” One more fan even predicted Chalamet’s potential Oscar nomination and wrote, “Timothée Chalamet has entered the Oscars conversation!”
A Complete Unknown will release in theatres in December.
