The bodies of five people have been recovered after a plane crashed at an airport in Nepal's Kathmandu, local media reported on Wednesday.

At least 19 people, comprising crew and technical staff, were on board the Pokhara-bound Saurya Airlines plane when it caught on fire around 11 am.

The plane burst into flames after it skidded off the runway within minutes of taking off, a spokesperson of the airport told NDTV.

Videos from the spot show a large fire with plumes of smoke rising near the Tribhuvan International Airport. Fire fighters are at the scene and are trying to douse the fire.

The cause of the fire is not known yet. Rescue operations are on.

The Tribhuvan International Airport is a tabletop airport which is located on the top of a plateau surrounded by deep gorges and valleys on all sides.

In 2023, a Yeti Airlines aircraft crashed on Pokhara killing all 72 people on board, including five Indians.
