The Indian television industry has long grappled with issues such as excessive working hours, delayed payments and a toxic work environment. The industry’s relentless focus on content production hinders improvements in these areas, compelling many actors to bid adieu to the industry. Nia Sharma, who seen in Ek Hazaaron Mein Meri Behna Hai, Jamai Raja, Naagin, and Ishq Mein Majawan, decided to stay away from the small screen as she was “sceptical” about its future at a time when every other show was going off air in a few months.
Nia, who made a comeback on the small screen with supernatural thriller, Suhagan Chudail, recently opened up about the challenges of transitioning to other platforms and the difficulties of finding substantial, well-funded projects at this stage in her career, calling the transition “extremely challenging”.

During a conversation with ETimes, Nia Sharma spoke how despite receiving offers, they often lacked substance or never materialised. The actor admitted that breaking free from her established image and transitioning to a new medium proved to be incredibly difficult. Although recognised and appreciated by industry professionals, these connections didn’t translate into concrete projects. This period of exploration spanned three years, during which television offers also came her way but failed to resonate. She also expressed her belief that the overall quality of television content has declined in recent years, contributing to the industry’s current state.
Nia has made a return to television with her role as the alluring yet sinister witch, Nishigandha, in Colors TV’s supernatural drama Suhagan Chudail. The actor, known for her bold choices, is also currently entertaining audiences as a panelist on the reality comedy show, Laughter Chefs.

Nia explained the challenges she faces in securing suitable projects. She revealed that many potential opportunities fall through due to budget constraints or mismatched expectations, stating that there’s a “misconception” that she’s “expensive”, which often discourages people from approaching her. However, the actor also emphasised the difficulty of finding projects that align with her interests and professional standards. She explained that negotiating “terms and conditions” at this stage of her career is no “easy feat”.

The Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi alum acknowledged the risk of stepping away from the limelight after being a prominent television figure. She admitted that her decision was met with skepticism from those around her. She admits that often times people’s opinions “would get to her”. However, she realises that she was “refusing work for a reason” as “fading away” has never been her concern, stressing that she was able to “sit back” and “handle the pressure”.
The 33-year-old earlier told PTI that it was a conscious decision (to not do TV shows) as the idea was that TV overall in the last few years has really drained in terms of TRP. “Every show was shutting (down) in three to four months. The kind of shows I’ve done, they had longevity, they were running for years and years. I always believed that a project shouldn’t be like, ‘It came and it went off air and no one was aware about it,” she added.
