Akshay Kumar‘s Sarfira has been having a tough time at the box office since its release on July 12. The inspirational drama has completed five days in cinemas, but is already turning out to be one of his worst-performing movies in recent times. The film is a remake of Sudha Kongara‘s National Award-winning Tamil film Soorarai Pottru (2020) starring Suriya, which itself was an adaptation of GR Gopinath’s memoir Simply Fly: A Deccan Odyssey.

According to early estimates by industry tracking website Sacnilk, Sarfira’s day five (July 16) box office collections stood at Rs 1.75 crore, which means the film saw a very slight jump in its earnings on Tuesday. Also directed by Sudha Kongara, Sarfira has earned a total of 15.20 crore nett in India in five days. Sarfira is pacing ahead of Akshay’s Sefliee (2023), which was the Hindi remake of the 2019 Malayalam film Driving Licence, starring Prithviraj Sukumaran. Selfiee’s lifetime collection stood at Rs 17.03 crore.

On Monday, Sarfira witnessed 13.61 percent overall occupancy in India. Its occupancy in Mumbai, where there were 405 shows, was 15.50 percent. In Delhi and NCR, the occupancy was 14 percent from 522 shows. While Kamal Haasan’s highly anticipated Indian 2 is also not performing as expected, it’s still posing a level of competition for Sarfira. Indian 2’s five-day collections stand at Rs 65.15 crore. Sarfira and Indian 2’s underwhelming performances is now making place for Anand Tiwari’s Bad Newz, starring Vicky Kaushal, Tripti Dimri and Ammy Virk. The romantic comedy is backed by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions, and will be released on Friday.

Sarfira is Akshay’s 150th film. One known as the “box office king,” the actor has seen a rough patch in the last four years. Several of his releases — Samrat Prithviraj, Raksha Bandhan, Ram Setu, Selfiee, Mission Raniganj, and Bade Miyan Chote Miyan — have been box office duds.
